Sacrament of Baptism

baptismalfont Congratulations! God has blessed you with a glorious gift, your child, the visible sign of your love for each other. What more beautiful way we can welcome your child into God's family than through the sacrament of Baptism. There is a deep family, social and spiritual responsibility incurred at the Baptism of your child. This is a profound decision you make, to live the faith. Your child will grow in faith by your example of fidelity to the Church, prayer and Christian charity. Our parish community wants your child to have a close relationship with God and we are committed to offering you all the help we can give.

To Prepare for Baptism

Please call Deacon Frank Para, in our parish office, at 973-887-5572, ext. 112 soon after the birth of your child to make arrangements.

Do I have to be a member of the parish to have my child baptized at St. Rose?
The celebration of all our sacraments are community events, and our community is the parish where we live. If you are a Catholic parent living within the boundaries of St. Rose's, you have the right to have your child baptized here. If you live in another city, but for family or other reasons would like to have your child baptized here, that is a possibility with approval. Please talk to Fr. Owen or Deacon Marcin about your situation.
Are we required to attend any Baptism preparation sessions?
Because the child is unable to express faith, the parish invites the parents into a preparation session prior to the Baptism celebration. Through this session we hope to deepen your understanding of the sacrament of Baptism and make you ever more aware of the importance this sacrament plays in your life as a family of God. This is a one-time session that lasts between sixty and ninety minutes, and both parents are to attend.
Who can be Godparents?
Godparents should be chosen by parents primarily to be good examples of Catholic commitment, practice, and spirituality to their child. At least one Godparent must be a practicing Catholic (which means that he/she must have been baptized, received their Confirmation and First Communion, and must be actively practicing their Catholic faith). Godparents who are not members of our parish are requested to obtain a "Sponsor Certificate" from their local parish priest. This certificate should be provided to the parish office prior to the celebration of the Baptism.
When are Baptism celebrations held?
Baptisms are celebrated on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Arrangements should be made with Deacon Frank at 973-887-5572, ext 112.
What is the customary offering for a Baptism
An offering of $50.00 for each Baptism is gratefully appreciated
